River of Death

Trees are ablaze, wearing spring like Joseph wore his technicolored dream coat. But there is one section of the forest that doesn't. They've had their coat ripped of. They've been raped of their colors by something they cannot control. Death. The river seems peaceful, but it's a candy-coated guillotine  The trees are now bathed in ghosts, a sheet of gray covering those only a few paces from the river. You can almost hear the trees calling out for help, but the death plague has already got them. Slowly, they wilt, giving their strength over to the cancer. Their pride is slowly turned to shame as they wilt further and further into an eternal sleep.

I wrote this poem on our way down to Gulf Shores, Alabama over spring break. It was interesting because a huge group of trees seemed to be coated in pieces of fishing nets. I thought I'd jot somethings down about it, and this is what I came up with. I wish I could have gotten a picture to show you, but I didn't.

This doesn't really relate to anything going on in my life right now, but I thought I'd share it with you guys anyway. It seems strange that so many people are actually reading this blog -- I thought that it would be a loner blog. So, if you feel compelled to share it with others, please do!

Another random thing that I can write about is rain. It has rained for almost a week straight (or so it seems) and we've had a lot of flooding. Luckily our house didn't have any water in the basement, which is a blessing for us. It's not something that I think about often, but there are lots of little blessings that happen in my life. One of these is not getting rain in our basement.

This past summer, we got a pool put in (yay!). But they sloped the concrete so that it pointed away from the pool and toward our house, and we were worried that we were going to get water in our basement.

So one last random thing to think about for today. I've been listening to the broadway soundtrack to the show "Newsies", which is like my favorite ever of all time ever. There's a lot of depth there, and if you haven't ever listened to it, I suggest that you do (here's a link). There's a lot to think about in this musical.

In case you don't know, Newsies is a musical about the Newsboys strike in 1899. This was a powerful movement that gave kids all across the country to rebel and fight for what they believe in. I can go off about Newsies and the power and message for probably hours, so I won't bore you.

I think that Newsies is such a big deal, at least to me personally, is because it tells us that things are worth fighting for. Maybe you won't get the outcome that you want, or that you think you will, but it will teach you something about what really matters to you. Maybe it's not money and newspapers like it was the Newsies, but it teaches me that I can fight for what I want to fight for.

A reminder to always fight for things worth fighting for,
Carly
