The Locust Effect // Election 2016

“If you are reading this book in a state of reasonable security and peace without fear of being enslaved, imprisoned, beaten, raped or robbed, it is either the case that you are in a place of isolation far away from human beings, or you are the beneficiary of a system that is protecting you from the violent impulses of the human being that are around you” (Haugen and Boutros, p. 48). After reading this line about four times, I was able to pinpoint why it was resonating with me so much. We have just elected the most under qualified bigot to be the next president of the United States. I immediately found myself reading this sentence trying to figure out where the word “privilege” was going to show up. It didn’t show up specifically, but wow is it implied. This line could so easily be read, “If you’re excited about Trump being elected in America without fear of being disrespected, deported, bullied, beaten, raped, robbed, assaulted, etc., you are the beneficiary of a system that is pr

Just a Quick Thought // Band-Aids

The new band-aid commercial is pretty cute. It's all about protecting the ones you love by covering them and protecting them. At the end they say something alone the lines of "it's our human instinct to cover." To a point I think that's true. We naturally want to cover our pain and our wounds so they can get better. However, I think that's also an irony. Sometimes we cover up our pain and our emotions so that our loved ones don't see it.  Of course band-aid is talking about physical wounds. Those are the ones we cover up. But I don't think we can talk about covering wounds as humans and not address the emotional wounds that can be left behind. These emotional wounds are sometimes even more harmful than the physical. They say "time heals all wounds," but I think they're only talking about physical wounds. I don't think the band-aid commercial is wrong. I only think sometimes covering ourselves can get us into more trouble t

Ripples of Life // Ripples of Death

There are endless amounts of quotes, movies, books, etc. all yelling one incredibly clear message: live your life to the fullest. We all want our life to mean something, to make ripples in the waves of the world. We want someone to notice us for the extraordinary things that we do. And rightfully so. We should strive for our lives to mean something greater than ourselves, to have a goal that will further influence people for years to come. I think deep down, it's something that most humans alive want to know -- that their life will be remembered by someone. It's scary when we realize that our life is becoming something mundane and boring, something that children write about when they're in the first grade. Get up, go to work, eat, sleep, repeat. So there are countless self-help books telling us to grab life by the bootstraps. To step up and really make our life what we want it to be. To go and achieve all the things that we've been dreaming of our whole life. I thin

"...And the [sparklers'] glare // the [fireworks] bursting in air..."

Today, hundreds of man-made bomb-like explosions fill the sky. We strangely call them fireworks. Since it's the fourth of July and all that, I suppose I can forgive it. I'm not incredibly patriotic on the average day, so today is special. Go America, we became independent of Great Britain in 1776. But what if we didn't? All of these fireworks going off just makes me think of the first independence day. America and Great Britain had just finished a terribly bloody war. Instead of fireworks going off, they were actual bombs. There were men all around dying for rights they believed in, even when they couldn't believe in themselves or their futures. I can't help but wonder what being an almost 20 year old women looked like back in those days. Would I have been married? Have children? Or would I be one of those daughters who's impossible to marry off because of her quick tongue? And never mind the fact that I could be raising a family, what about the country as

The Pinky Finger // Why I think it's the most powerful

Faith is tricky. It's hard to walk in the life of faith without any "real" guidance for where you're going. To be honest, some of the time I'm not fully sure if the bible is real. But, then there is always something that goes down in my life that assures me that God is real and my faith can be real, if I pursue it. But I'm not here today to tell you about the cool things that God has done in my life -- that would require far more, much longer posts than this. But I am here to shine a small light on why faith is so hard. It's going to be straightforward, but hopefully it will make sense and open up something that you maybe didn't think about before. And that, is how to walk of life of sticky faith. In Exodus, a miraculous story takes place. The Hebrew people are slaves in Egypt, and the Pharaoh has ordered that every newborn hebrew boy gets drown in the river (as a means of population control). There is one, Hebrew mother in particular who didn'

Faith vs. Works // the grand debate

At floor bible study this week, we were talking about James 2: 14-16, which talks about faith and deeds. It reads: " What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?  Can such faith save them?   Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.   If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?   In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.   But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds,  and I will show you my faith  by my deeds.   You believe that there is one God.  Good! Even the demons believe that —and shudder. You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?   Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?   You see that his faith and his actions were working together,

Growing with the Word

Last night, I was at bible study with come girls from my dorm floor. We're reading through the book of James for both bible study and our main chapel series, and it's really a great book. Last night, we read James 1: 19-26, which says, "My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry, because human anger dow not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word by does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks lie. But whoever looks intent and continues in it -- not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it -- they will be blessed in what they do. Tho
